Dr Hsein Kew
School/Department: Natural & Built Environments
Position: Associate Professor - Lead Admissions and Recruitment Tutor; Interim Head of Department
Dr Hsein Kew is currently an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at Kingston University since 2015. Prior to that, he was a Senior Lecturer since 2010. He started his academic career as a Lecturer in 2007. He mainly teaches Construction Materials especially in Concrete Technology, which is his subject expertise. In addition, he also teaches Engineering Materials, AutoCAD, Civil Engineering Design, Sustainability and Traffic Management.
He completed his undergraduate studies in BSc in Building Technology in Malaysia and was awarded Book Prize for best performance in 1999. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from University of Strathclyde in Glasgow in 2007, after obtaining his MSc in Facilities Design and Planning also from the same University in 2000. He did his PhD research work as Research Assistant, funded by Onyx Environmental Trust Fund. His PhD thesis was among the early pioneering research on rubberised concrete. His research work focused on the use of inherent properties of rubberised concrete in developing viable rubberised concrete products such as lightweight rubberised concrete blocks with enhanced properties. He then continued his research work at Kingston University, including development of inherent impact absorbent of rubberised concrete in concrete crash barriers. After completing his PhD, he was employed as Research Assistant working on EPSRC project on Application of Low Density Aircrete Products in 2006 at Kingston University. Other research interest includes innovation in concrete for structural applications, recycling and reuse of waste materials in concrete and self-healing concrete. He holds referee positions in international journals. He also completed a Postgraduate Teaching Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from Kingston University in 2009.
At Kingston University, he has since taken the role of Admissions Tutor for all Civil Engineering Programmes, including franchise programme and Head of Admissions with the role of overseeing the Admissions process in the department. In addition, he has taken the role as Outreach Champion. He has great passion in Widening Participation by inspiring young people to continue into Higher Education through Outreach activities. He is also Science without Borders (SwB) co-ordinator for the department.
His pedagogic interests include enhancing student engagement through Student Support System (a tailored scheme based on PAL), assisting Level 4 transition, use of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in enhancing student learning experience and creating positive learning environment. He is currently a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
