Nano-materials and Composites

Nano-materials & Composites is a highly interdisciplinary theme which consists of four main working groups, each based around experienced researchers with an international profile. The work in each group is a balance of pure and applied research, strongly supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the European Union Sixth Framework Programme.

The research working groups are:

  • Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
    The Theoretical and Applied Mechanics group studies problems of granular materials, fracture mechanics, auxetics and solid polymer foams. Led by Professor Tao Zhang, the group has one research fellow and four research students associated with the group.
  • Molecular Electronics and Photonics
    The scope of the Molecular Electronics and Photonics group ranges from the design and synthesis of liquid crystals and electronic polymers to the processing and device applications of commercial optical and electronic materials. Led by Professor Peter Foot, the group has one postdoctoral researcher, one visiting professor, an honorary researcher and seven postgraduate researchers associated with this area.
  • Constructional Materials & Sustainable Technology
    This group is concerned with the properties, application and durability of concrete, masonry and other constructional materials, as well as with sustainability, recycling and reuse of waste materials. The group has two visiting researchers, a PGRA and five PhD students and is led by Professor Mukesh Limbachiya.
  • Industrial Control ResearchThe group focuses on the areas of particular expertise and long standing recognition of Kingston University, namely: Automotive Engineering and Avionics/Space Systems, with particular emphasis on autonomous systems. At the same time we continue to develop research in other areas of control engineering, for instance in control of power systems and in process control.
