Students
Nearly all SEC undergraduate students can apply to do a one year industrial placement between years 2 and 3 of
their degree. A placement provides relevant work experience so that you can improve your chances of graduating with
a higher grade degree, enhance your CV, get relevant work experience and get a good graduate job. It also enables
you to earn a years' salary whilst studying (the vast majority of placements are paid).
Students undertake placements to get work experience that is directly related to their degree and the area they
would like to work in as a graduate. Placements can be with large multinational companies (e.g. AXA, Network Rail,
Airbus, GE), international companies, local companies and small start ups.
- 81% placement students and 34% non-placement students got a 1st or 2.1 (CISM Faculty 2008).
- 100% of placement students during 2008 recommend doing a placement (CISM faculty).
- Many employers that have a graduate programme will fast track their placement students to a graduate job.
Getting a placement and passing the placement year are ultimately your responsibility however there is a lot of
support available for students looking to secure a placement (e.g. with writing CVs).
