Short Course
Course Aims
- To examine environmental, social and economic sustainability credentials of concrete construction;
- To demonstrate in-depth knowledge on principles of sustainability relevant to concrete construction.
- To gain a better understanding of robust sustainable concrete practice, including associated regulatory framework and initiatives.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Identify and define the principles of sustainable concrete construction, and explain associated practical implications.
- Review environmental, social and economical impacts of concrete constituents, production techniques and in-service performance
- Identify, define and apply regulatory provisions and newly introduced initiatives for sustainable concrete engineering practice.
- Design and specify concrete constituents fit for purpose and environmentally-friendly durable concrete structures.
- Analyse and prepare robust sustainable concrete practice guidance.
Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes
- A comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of sustainable design with concrete;
- An awareness of developing technologies related to sustainable construction with concrete;
- A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mathematical and computer models relevant to sustainable design and construction and, an appreciation of their limitations;
- An understanding of concepts in sustainable design and construction and the ability to apply them in projects;
- Wide knowledge and comprehensive understanding of process and methodologies in sustainable design and construction design and the ability to apply and adapt them in unfamiliar situations
- The ability to generate an innovative design for sustainable concrete structures to fulfil new needs
- A thorough understanding of current practice and some appreciation of new developments in sustainable design and construction
