Standards and Homologation

Short Course

Course Aims

  • To develop a fundamental understanding of the various Standards and Homologation requirements applicable in various world markets
  • To examine the techniques and methods employed in the testing of vehicles and vehicle sub systems to certify compliance
  • To develop an awareness of wider regulatory issues, both global and local, relating to vehicles and the automotive industry as a whole

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of vehicle Standards and Homologation requirements for a given market
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of standardised techniques and methods used in the testing of vehicle and vehicle sub systems to certify compliance
  • Show competence in interpreting data obtained from various vehicle test procedures

Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes

  • An understanding of concepts from a range of areas including some outside engineering, and the ability to apply them effectively in engineering projects. (US3m)
  • Understanding of the requirement for engineering activities to promote sustainable development. (S3)
  • Awareness of the framework of relevant legal requirements governing engineering activities, including personnel, health, safety, and risk (including environmental risk) issues. (S4)
  • A thorough understanding of current practice and its limitations and some appreciation of likely new developments. (P1m)
  • Understanding use of technical literature and other information sources. (P4)
  • Understanding of appropriate codes of practice and industry standards. (P6)

Candidates whose first language is not English will be required to show evidence of an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
