Mechatronics & Automation Systems
Short Course
Course Aims
- To develop understanding of main principles of robotic, industrial automation and mechatronics systems
- It will consider the main building blocks of such systems, namely: modelling of dynamical systems, especially multi-body mechanical systems, sensors and actuators for robotic systems, feedback control, and artificial intelligence methods, with the study of automation from an engineering perspective
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of mechatronics control and its application in automation
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the functions of a robot and its embedded systems such as sensors and actuators
- Apply appropriate procedures to build dynamic models of robotics systems and design feedback control algorithms
- Apply advanced techniques such as fuzzy logic and digital logic design to optimise control in automation processes
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of artificial neural networks and adaptive control
Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes
- Ability to extract data pertinent to an unfamiliar problem, and apply its solution using computer based engineering tools when appropriate
- A thorough understanding of current practice and its limitations and some appreciation of likely new developments
- Ability to apply engineering techniques taking account of a range of commercial and industrial constraints
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering materials and components
