Short Course
Course Aims
This module covers the basics of the English legal systems, the law of contract and aspects of the law of tort. It is intended to lay a firm foundation in English Legal systems, contract and tort so that students with little or no previous experience of law can proceed with other modules contained in the course
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Review the source of English law and the relationship to EU law and be able to describe in depth the structure of the English courts
- Apply the tort of negligence, duty of care, breach of duty and remoteness of damage
- Analyse how a contract is formed, define contractual terms and exemption clauses and explain in depth privity of contract
- Define mistake, misrepresentation, duress and undue influence, and frustration
- Evaluate and critically analyse how a contract is discharged and Identify how a contract is performed and breached
Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes
- An understanding of English law and its relationship to EU law
- The knowledge to describe in depth the structure of the courts
- The ability to analyse how a contract is formed and to be able to define contractual terms and exemption clauses
- To be able to understand and explain in depth privity of contract

- To be aware of nuisance, Rylands v Fletcher and vicarious performance
- To be able to apply the limitation of actions

Candidates whose first language is not English will be required to show evidence of an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
