Short Course

Course Aims

  • Give students an understanding of the importance of information that is required by different organisations and the need to have an information strategy in order to support the business strategy.
  • An appreciation of the range of facilities which information systems may provide for an organisation together with experience and an understanding of methods and tools for the development of appropriate systems to professional standards.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the role of information in the leadership, management and control of the organisation
  • Compare and contrast the importance held by global electronic handling of information over the internet for the future of business
  • Select and apply core techniques for modelling an organisation's information needs
  • Identify and evaluate the selection and procurement of suitable systems for each phase of a project
    Apply and categorise the potential of information systems to support decision making, people working in groups, the integration of corporate activities and the importance of people

Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes

  • An understanding of business application systems, business strategy analysis and the definition of an information strategy
  • Knowledge of systems development, analysis and design together with the tools and techniques of system development methodologies
  • Knowledge of data and information management, from the development of an information strategy to the management and control of stored data
  • An awareness in exploiting communications technology such distributed processing, web technology and electronic business
  • Ability to use information systems in construction
  • Realisation of the threats to information and the need for appropriate security measures
  • Appreciation of the ethical and social issues involved in the use of information and the storing of data

Candidates whose first language is not English will be required to show evidence of an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
