Control Systems
Short Course
Course Aims
To show how to analyse problems of industrial control systems and to present several methods which are used in control design and implementation. The particular aspects covered by the module will be:
- Feedback control systems
- Analysis of dynamic responses of systems and how this is affected by the feedback loop
- Design methods for continuous-time control systems
- Introduction to discrete time systems
- Methods for analysis of discrete time systems
- Introduction to modern control system design methods
- Learning the functionality of computer control design software.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Analyse continuous time linear control systems
- Design controllers for linear systems using standard methods based on time-domain and frequency domain approaches
- Tune PID controllers
- Analyse and design linear discrete-time control systems
- Use modelling, simulation and control design tools
Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes
- Knowledge of characteristics of particular equipment, processes or products
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering materials and components
- A comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of mechanical and related engineering disciplines
- A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mathematical models relevant to the mechanical and related engineering disciplines, and an appreciation of their limitations
