  • Provide intensive hand-on training on leading commercial CAD/CAM packages
  • Enable students to develop the knowledge of the whole concept from 3D Solid Modelling to the data preparation for CNC (computer numerical control) machining

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Understand the concepts of wireframe, surface and solid modelling
  • Understand part modelling and part data exchange standards (VDA, IGES, STEP)
  • Develop knowledge in manufacturing job planning, DNC interface and CNC machining
  • Understand concurrent engineering principles and techniques such as design for manufacturing and assembly, tooling, fixture and mould design
  • Understand the role of APT CLDATA format and post-processing in part programming

Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes

  • Ability to extract data pertinent to an unfamiliar problem, and apply its solution using computer based engineering tools when appropriate
  • Ability to generate an innovative design for systems, components or processes to fulfil new needs
  • A thorough understanding of current practice and its limitations and some appreciation of likely new developments
