Advanced Automotive Engineering

Short Course

Course Aims

  • To introduce the students to aspects of Advanced Automotive Engineering
  • To give an understanding of Developing Technologies in Powertrain and Braking System Design
  • To examine Direct Fuel Injection Systems for Spark and Compression Ignition Applications

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of Diesel Technology
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of High Pressure Direct Injection Systems for Compression Ignition and Spark Ignition Applications
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principle combustion characteristics as applied to Compression and Spark Ignition Engines
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of All Wheel Drive & Brake-by-wire Systems, their design, operating principles and application
  • Demonstrate the ability to use Engine Simulation and modelling Software

Contribution to UK-SPEC Outcomes

  • A comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of mechanical and related engineering disciplines. (US1m)
  • Ability to use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies. (E1m)
  • Understanding of contexts in which engineering knowledge can be applied (e.g. operations and management, technology, development, etc). (P3)
