Student profile:

Vishnu Swaroop

Vishnu studied his first degree in Information Science and Engineering at Visveswaraya Technological University in Belgaum, India. Inspired by his father and grandfather who both obtained doctorates in their chosen field, Vishnu decided to study at postgraduate level.

"I chose the MSc in Networking & Data Communications, as I have been interested in computer networking since studying my first degree. I had offers from eight universities within the UK, however, I chose Kingston University mainly because of its close proximity to London and the course structure which suited my requirements. The MSc will definitely add more value to my career prospects.

I haven't previously studied Data Communications and, so far, I have found the course very interesting. I am learning new subjects and gaining insight into the latest industry trends.

The education process is different in the UK as it is about self study which helps you to have a better understanding of the concepts. I have also been able to meet students from other countries.

Apart from the study, I have the opportunity to provide teaching assistance to undergraduate students in the networking laboratories which has given me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I could help fellow students.

The scholarship I received has added a lot of value and more meaning to my stay in the UK. It has inspired me to make the most of the scholarship, as well as help to reduce my financial burden."

Yinka

I previously completed a BSc in 'Computing with Business' at Kingston University, which provided me with an educational and enjoyable experience.

My keen and determined attitude to expand on my academic knowledge is one of the reasons why I chose to proceed with a postgraduate course. I believe that a master's degree can help elevate my employment opportunities, and potentially separate me from a student with just an undergraduate degree.

I chose the 'MSc IT and Strategic Innovation with Management Studies' because some of the modules within this programme are similar to the modules I encountered during my undergraduate degree. Therefore, this should enable me to have a broader understanding, and enhance my academic knowledge in the subject areas I require.

My first choice was Kingston University, because of my familiarity with the university, and the type of course I wanted to do. I was aware that Kingston provided a variety of courses at MSc level, which were both relevant and helpful towards my academic and long-term employment prospects.

In addition, the faculty of SEC at Kingston University provides excellent facilities for its students to help them realize their academic potential.

My postgraduate course should offer me another academic challenge, which may be more advanced and enhance my academic knowledge. I hope to gain even more independence throughout my programme because an MSc programme is more than just an academic experience, it teaches academic time management skills.

My long-term career aim is to own an IT company of which I have started; that provides a product, or delivers a service that nobody else can. My short-term aim is to be employed by a well-established corporation that uses my abilities to full affect.

The course so far is how I expected it to be in regards to the topics we have covered in lectures and the structure of the course timetable. The course requires you to display both efficient and time management skills, because the basis of the course is independent study. Students have the opportunity to manage their academic learning, the way it best suits the individual and the MSc develops different skill sets.

The course has met my early expectations and what I most enjoy is the flexibility of how the MSc courses run. In addition, the projects assigned so far are very relevant to the industry and workplace today; in regards to the theory and technology we are using.

I am awaiting notice for teaching assistant duty this term, but I have previous teaching experience when I volunteered as the computer trainer at the 'Bradbury Active Age Centre', in Kingston.

I would strongly advise and recommend any student thinking of pursuing an MSc to choose Kingston University. Once again, Kingston has excellent facilities with the academic staff that are able to get the best out of its students.
