Dr Pedro Barra
School/Department: Life Sciences, Pharmacy & Chemistry
Position: Associate Professor
I graduated in Human Nutrition & Dietetics (5 year degree) from University of Porto, Portugal, in 2000. Subsequently, I came to the UK and graduated in 2001 with an MSc in Clinical Nutrition & Immunology from University of Surrey Roehampton. The MSc not only improved my understanding of the underlying biochemistry and physiology of nutrition and the immunological mechanisms of disease, but also helped me develop the necessary research skills and establish the necessary contacts to pursue the degree of PhD. I concluded my PhD at Roehampton University in July 2007 and graduated from University of Surrey (Title of Thesis: "RNA and protein turnover in premature infants with necrotising enterocolitis"). During my time as an MSc and PhD student, I not only increased my knowledge base but also developed the skills necessary for administration, supervision, technical, research, and teaching.
In November 2007, I took my first full-time lectureship position as a Lecturer in Nutrition at Kingston University. The BSc (Honours) Nutrition (Full Field) on which I teach is accredited by the Nutrition Society (now Association for Nutrition). I lecture to BSc (Honours) Nutrition and BSc (Honours) Exercise, Nutrition, and Health students in several Nutrition modules across years 1, 2, and 3. I have found my teaching role to be a very rewarding experience.
I since completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education at Kingston University to speed up my integration within the Faculty/Lecturer Role. I have also continued to engage in continuous professional development in the subject area of Nutrition. Both are important in order to maximise the potential for Nutritional Sciences within the University and for curriculum development. I have since taken the role of Admissions Tutor for the BSc (Honours) Nutrition and Field Director for Joint combinations with Nutrition. In addition, I am the Erasmus Coordinator for the School of Life Sciences.
