Dr Peter Hooda

School/Department: Natural & Built Environments
Position: Reader

Dr Peter Hooda obtained his PhD in Environmental Biogeochemistry from London University in 1992. Before joining the School in 2001, he worked at several leading soil/environmental science research laboratories, including MLURI, Aberdeen and Lancaster University. Peter has a BSc (Honours) in Agriculture and an MSc in Soil Science from the Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar (India) where subsequently he worked as a Soil Scientist for six years prior to pursuing a PhD.
This interdisciplinary educational background has allowed Peter to study a wide range of topics and to develop improved understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of trace elements and nutrients in terrestrial and aquatic environments. His work on understanding the underlying processes of metal/nutrient transfer between soil and water and soil and plants includes a widely cited body of work on the long-term behaviour of metals in soils, and land use impacts on diffused water pollution.
Peter is the editor of a major text book, Trace Elements in Soils (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010), and has also guest-edited special journal issues on Heavy Metals in Soils (Adv. Environ. Res. 2003) and Microbial and Nutrient Contaminants in Fresh and Coastal Waters (J. Environ. Manage. 2008). He is an associate editor with the Journal of Environmental Management, and sits on the Editorial Board of the Science of the Total Environment.
In his current position Peter is the Course Director for the MSc Environmental and Earth Resources Management, and MSc Sustainable Environmental Development with Management Studies programmes.
