Dr Nikolaos Vitzilaios
School/Department: Mechanical and Automotive Engineering
Position: Senior Lecturer in Robotics
Dr. Vitzilaios was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He received his B.Eng., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Production and Management Engineering (equivalent to Mechanical Engineering) from the Technical University of Crete, in 2004, 2005 and 2010, respectively. His PhD dissertation was on the development of an autonomous navigation system for small scale unmanned helicopters, a work that included extended experimental work and field testing.
From 2011 to 2012 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada. He worked on the development of a navigation controller for a helicopter UAV to be used for power line inspection.
From December 2012 to December 2015, he was a Research Scientist at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Denver, Colorado, USA. He was affiliated with the Unmanned Systems Research Institute that focuses in research in the area of unmanned systems and robotics. His duties included research in the area of aerial and ground robotics, grant management, student supevision and maintenance\piloting of the institute's fleet. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor in the Mechatronics Engineering program of the same university.
He joined Kingston University London in January 2016 as Lecturer in Robotics and Mechatronics and since November 2016 he has been promoted to Senior Lecturer in Robotics at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since October 2016.
His research interests include system identification and model development, navigation and control of autonomous unmanned systems, aerial and ground robotics, service robotics. He has hands-on experience in several robotic platforms. He has been the (co)author and reviewer of several journal and conference papers, and has delivered numerous invited talks and tutorials in the area of aerial robotics.
