Prof. Elizabeth Tyrrell

School/Department: Pharmacy and Chemistry
Position: Professor Of Medicinal Chemistry

Biography

My PhD project, entitled approaches to the synthesis of the frog toxin Histrionicotoxin, were undertaken at the University of Southampton from 1985-1988 under the supervision of Professor Phil Parsons

Research Interests

I have a number of topic areas including asymmetric synthesis, silica-supported synthesis and catalysis. I have a number of publications into the chemistry of cobalt clusters namely the Nicholas reaction. We have most recently used this chemistry successfully in the synthesis of novel anti-cancer and antihypertensive agents in collaboration with colleagues at St Georges. We also are currently exploring the synthesis of novel hop acids as both anti-cancer agents and as antibacterials (MRSA).

Teaching Area

I teach modules in Natural Product Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Organic Chemistry

Other Professional Activity

In terms of Comsultancy I have worked with a number industrial partners in the Fragrance industries. I have carried out several projects under the Teaching Company Schemes (later called Knowledge Transfer Partnerships). I have been a part time tutor with the Open University and co-authored undergraduate laboratory practicals
