Dr Carl Hall

School/Department: Life Sciences, Pharmacy & Chemistry
Position: Senior Lecturer

Biography

I have been a lecturer in Analytical and Forensic Science for 20 years. Firstly at the University of Hudderfield where I also spent a period as deputy course leader and was part of the team which developed the degrees in; Pharmaceutical Science, Forensic and Analytical Science and the MChem with an Industrial Placement, and more recently at Kingston University.

I have supervised a number of postgraduate students predominantly in the area of novel polymers and biosensors as well as undertaken consultancy work for industry. I have been an active member of the Analytical Science community through my work with the Analytical Division of the RSC.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

  • 1987 - 1991 PhD - Coventry, Functional Dopants in Conducting Polymers
  • 1983 - 1987 BSc Chemistry - Leeds

Research Interests

My research interests have focused on two themes: electroanalysis and polymer synthesis and characterisation and their applications in the development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. Generally this has focussed on polymeric immobilisation methodologies for enzyme based amperometric sensors. These have included conducting polymers, photolithographic polymers and emulsion systems. I have also been involved in electrochemical waste purification and reclamation projects and most recently, a study of the electrochemistry of self assembled copper helicates and the electrochemical characterisation of palladium catalysts in conjunction with Syngenta.
I have published a number of papers and I am a regular referee for Chemical Communications, Journal of Materials Chemistry and Soft Matter. I have given a number of oral and poster presentations at both National and International conferences and I have been involved with the organisation of a range of meetings and conferences.

Teaching Area

I have been in my current post at Kingston University since September 2008 and teach on a number of Analytical and Forensic Science modules across levels 5, 6 and 7 within the School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry. These include the following modules where I am the Module Leader: CH5006 Analytical Science CH6010 / CH7110 Forensic Chemistry and Trace Analysis CH7010 Quality Systems and Statistics CH7100 MSc Project. As well as a number of courses where I am a member of the teaching team: CH5004 Analytical Chemistry CH6007 Advanced Analytical Chemistry CH7040 Advanced Techniques and Applications.
